Jack Kleinberg (New Orleans, LA/ Los Angeles ,CA 1946-2022)

Jack Kleinberg was a well-known New Orleans scene painter, remembered as much for his eccentric personality as for his vivid artistic vision. He attended the renowned California Institute of the Arts, where he earned a degree in fine art before relocating to New Orleans in the early 1990s. Here, he lived and painted for more than three decades, immersing himself fully in the culture and rhythm of the city. By his own description, he chose to reside in the “thriving, throbbing, vibrant heart” near the French Quarter, so he could hear what he once called “the alcoholic heartbeat of New Orleans.”

Kleinberg painted numerous street scenes throughout the city but was famously reluctant to sell his work. He preferred to keep his paintings until he felt a prospective buyer truly understood and respected his art—only then would he consider parting with a piece. His paintings are colorful, exuberant, expressionist interpretations of recognizable New Orleans landmarks and neighborhoods. Describing himself as a “Neo-Fauvist,” he embraced bold color and energetic brushwork. Today, his works are sought after by collectors of Louisiana and Southern art, particularly those drawn to expressive portrayals of the charm and character of New Orleans.
